What is the value of a tree? Is it merely board feet and tons of pulp or does it have more value? These are the questions we began to ask. In 2002, the founders convened a leading roundtable of energy companies, conservation organizations and brokerage firms. The entire roundtable was about getting forest carbon sequestration credit and credibility in the marketplace.
The founders discovered that for forests to play a role in being a viable source of credits for buyers, scale is needed to satisfy large institutional buyers. With that in mind, they set forth to create various ways of achieving scale. From an economic perspective, scale is achieved by combining private dollars with government programs to accelerate the rate of reforestation, and in other ways, it is to simply take the hard work done by others and turn it into a new stream of income.
